Grimes is weird, to put it simply.
But she makes me want to dive into the literal definition of the word weird and why it's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of her personal style.
I first heard about Grimes, aka Claire Boucher, through discussions about her relationship with Elon Musk, but that's not to say her work and celebrity status is not outstanding on her own merit. She originally gained fame for her music through MySpace, where her chosen three genres being "grime" served as the origin for her infamous stage name.
I learned more about her when I watched her interview with fashion designer Stella Mccartney. She stands out in every possible way a human being can set themself apart from a crowd. She rambles in interviews, dresses, and does her make-up like she has taken one element of every alternative subculture, and has the ability to produce every part of a music record from scratch, from the intricate production of the tracks to the Album Artwork.
I think someone like Grimes whose style has come to be so eclectic, takes influence from every sector of what is considered "art." Literature, graphic design, and obviously music are key inspirational elements of her work. Given that she has designed most of if not all of her own album covers, I think that artistic outlet pours into her personal style. She wears clothes with designs and textures that have a lot of movement. Grimes is known for going to extremes for her desired results, and her fashion is no exception. She has said "there is a notable lack of continuity in [her] look" and I think that it is cool how she is so intentional with her look but she doesn't take herself too seriously and just goes with however she is feeling.
I think Fader said it best: she proves that "bedroom producers can make pop music and alt heroes can attend fashion shows."
