My Updated, Personal Favorite Fashion Only YouTube Channels to Watch

Sofia Greaves

Fashion used to be very prevalent on YouTube. In high school, I was obsessed with Back To School lookbooks. However, trends have changed since then, and the rise of the Beauty Community has overshadowed any need for these kinds of videos. Closet essentials are a thing of the past. Over time, I noticed that these same influencers that I turned to for outfit inspiration have lost interest in creating #ootd videos and more interested in being more open to their audience about their true selves, interests, and thoughts when creating new content. It has become less about putting on a show of being and teaching others to be cute and trendy. Now, especially in the pandemic, our favorite gurus from our middle school days like Megan Rienks, Bethany Mota, and Meredith Foster have focused more on fun lifestyle videos than on fashion. The shift towards being more comfortable in your own skill is important and integral to consider when going shopping if you are still learning what you like in fashion. For those of you who are still in need of some classic fashion inspiration (myself included), here are my top four fashion channels: (The best part? They all have different forms of content for subscribers with different needs).

BestDressed

UCLA film school graduate, Ashley, made sustainable fashion seem attainable to me with her trend-focused thrift flips and an innovative choice of clothes. My first video from her was a tutorial video for making a tube top out of old t-shirts. That was honestly the smart move if her goal was to have every broke fashion student subscribe to her. The concepts of her videos are pretty general and helpful for those who are interested in making their daily outfits a little more elevated for everyday occasions such as class, dates, and lunch with friends, just to name a few. Plus, as I mentioned she emphasizes the importance of thrifting and sustainability. My favorite videos by her are “How to build an outfit”, “50 OUTFITS for when you have nothing to wear”, and “10 WAYS TO (re)WEAR A DRESS.”

In Certain light

ICL is a London Based street style channel that was made to promote the physical blog. Videography is done by Joanna Theodorou and she has been regularly filming the unique high-end street style from all the major fashion weeks since 2014, as well as covering the off duty styles of notable models. You get a sense of what is going to be trendy and what will trickle down to the mass market just from seeing major influential people like Eva Chen, Alexa Chung, and Romee Strijd in these videos.

Frugal Aesthetic

While mainly targeting men, this entertaining channel by Christian Vui caters to anyone who is

even remotely into creative streetwear. He makes his content easy to follow with pictures being

shown as he discusses certain topics with voice-overs. On this channel, you will find an

abundance of How-To's: How to find your style, learn ways to wear a hoodie, and how to style

white sneakers are a few of his. Anyone subscribing to his channel has a good place for learning

how to define your personal style with basics and clothing you definitely already have.

TheLineUp

The incredible videography in all of their lookbooks makes their videos feel like ad campaigns

and are all just as aesthetically pleasing. There isn’t a lot of commentary or voice-overs, but I

always feel like I’m watching a high caliber Gucci or Prada campaign video of the like. I was

drawn to this channel because I liked their particular way of blending styles. Julia Dang is a

mastermind of street style and streetwear. She mixes high-end accessories with thrifted/easily

accessible pieces, giving access to a wide range of people and their budgets. Back when Maya

was a part of the channel, together they made outfits that use trendy pieces in a way where a

2016 back to school lookbook could be worn today and not feel dated. They also know how to

have fun with their style, and their summer lookbook captures the essence of the season.

Clever & Chic

Started in May of this year, I would describe this channel as The Take but instead of character tropes, it's fashion. I love her attention-grabbing editing style and how her content is more educational and uses psychological context when deep-diving into a character's personal style. She focuses on popular and favored fictional characters in film and television and I can’t wait to see what she produces in years to come. I am currently anticipating her styling series.

Nava Rose

If you have every color of the rainbow in your closet but you don’t know what to do with it when it's not black white or brown, follow Alex. She bounces between girly, streetwear, and edgy alternative. But what set her apart from street style channels that blend these style is that she separates them for you and makes outfits for each style specifically depending on the theme of her videos. I found her through her Ariana Grande x K fashion lookbook, and I subscribed from her Valentine's day lookbook. She has a large selection of clothes to choose from. So for these lookbooks, she creates essentially min capsule wardrobes and she’s u how many aesthetics you can hit with each piece of apparel.

HauteLeMode

The catchiest slogan on youtube award goes to Luke Meagher for “fun, sassy, bitchy, analytical.” Luke does award show and runway critiques and reactions mainly, but my favorite video from him was the 25 best luxury bags to buy for 2020. If you are looking to learn more about luxury designers and hear another person’s opinion of high fashion in an informal digestible setting HauteLeMode is the recommended subscription for you.
